Hello Grade 2 Families, 

Our primary literacy program in Grade 2 is UFLI (University of Florida Literacy Institute).  The website is copied below:

UFLI is a phonics based literacy program to support students’ overall reading and writing development.  We will have a UFLI focus lesson every week.  This will become a regular routine for students in Grade 2.  Each week (usually on Mondays) I will send home “At Home Practice” for UFLI.  Occasionally, I will also send home additional extra at home practice (e.g. today I will send home some counting to 200 practice).  On Thursdays/Fridays at school, students typically will have a word/sentence dictation (like a spelling quiz), related to the focus for the week.  I usually post the focus words on the class blog on Mondays.  I do not send home traditional homework; however, I do send home at home practice every week. I highly encourage families to work on these activities with your son/daughter, as they correspond directly to what the children are learning at school.  Activities do not need to be returned.  I recommend keeping activities in a binder/folder/ziploc bag at home to have for review/reference throughout the year.  In the near future, I will also be sending home student password/login information for OCSB Google Student Accounts, and OCSB portal accounts.  

Today, I will be sending home Lesson 38 (short vowel review) as well as counting to 200 practice.  Please work on these at your own pace and in a manner that best suits your child/family.  

The UFLI at home practice consists of:

1. Heart word focus (sight words that should be memorized or known by heart)

2. Roll and read (vowel, blends, digraph practice)

3. Reading practice

4. Word work chains, making words, and sentences (I recommend practising writing the sentences as well as reading them).
